TERRACE HOUSE IN YAMAGUCHIDAI

Living in the Town. Shaping the Townscape.
At the foot of a hill in the Tama Hills, where terraced residential plots quietly descend the slope, the project is situated within a calm suburban neighborhood.
The site comprises a total of nine buildings: a main house, a barn, and seven units of terrace houses. Each volume is subtly rotated and shifted, forming a staggered arrangement. The spaces enclosed by this facing, offset configuration become a garden-like michi—a path that runs from the southeastern entrance to a narrow trail to the northwest.
Although each dwelling is conceived as an independent volume, their scales are carefully calibrated and brought into relation through the manipulation of placement and distance. Together with the main house, the barn, and an existing small shrine, the terrace houses appear as elements of equal standing within the overall composition of the site, forming a shared landscape without subdivision or individual ownership boundaries.
By following the natural topography, the project evokes the image of the former townscape of the Tama Hills, blending into the surrounding residential fabric while quietly adding a new and distinct scene.
