ROW HOUSE ON TODOROKI-ZAKA

This project involves the development of a 12-unit wooden apartment complex on a sloped, productive green space—approximately 35 meters on each side—that was formerly used as a nursery plot, with the aim of preserving the land’s history and ecosystem.

An alleyway is set back to create a four-sided street frontage, and three narrow, elongated, house-shaped units are arranged in a windmill-like pattern, with a cross-shaped “Tsujiniwa” garden created in the remaining space.

We incorporated the existing giant camphor tree and utilized massive stones to create a hand-washing basin and a shoe-removal stone. We also set various stones of different sizes found on the site as retaining walls, steps, and benches, creating a cross-shaped garden with pathways opening onto the four surrounding roads.

We viewed the “nature” of wooden apartment buildings in suburban areas as a continuum between interior and exterior spaces, including the pathways.[Keisuke Watanabe]
