neri bldg.

“To connect them while gradually renewing them.”

This is a quiet, densely wood-framed residential area within close proximity to Nerima Station, but still retaining its unique neighborhood character. This project involved the long-term, gradual rebuilding of several existing houses scattered in an insect-like pattern. The project includes a 13-unit housing complex (neri bldg.) completed in 2006 and a 6-unit housing complex (neri bldg. 2) completed in 2009, both of which are located diagonally across from each other. In neri bldg., a common staircase and an exterior corridor on one side were removed from the building as if they were eaves, creating a sense of walking through a gap between the buildings. The building is a narrow, eel bed-like space. On the other hand, in neri bldg. 2, which is built on a narrow lot in the shape of an eel bed, an alleyway drawn in three-dimensionally passes through each unit and returns to the alleyway, thus creating a living space that feels like living in a connected alleyway in the city, which serves as a connection between the various alleyways (cul-de-sacs) scattered throughout the neighborhood. Together, they have developed a “three-dimensional alley” that is connected to the city, a project that will continue into the future.
